Zugspitze

Today, Monday 28 June,  we went to the top of Germany's highest mountain, Zugspitze. It's nearly 3000 metres high and there even  higher ones in Austria. The tickets were a bit expensive at €49 but we decided it was worth it.

We caught the cable car to the top of Zugspitze.

There is also a cog-wheel train that can be taken.

At the top, we see Germany's highest religious symbol.

The middle of Zugspitze appears to be an extinct volcano.

At the top of Zugspitze there are many outdoors eating areas.

The mountain is so tall that we look across at clouds.

Quite a few signs like this: Germany's highest beer garden.

Also highest barbecued sausage and so forth.

On the cable car side of Zugspitze, the views are scary.

 If you have a fear of heights, this place will do it.

Fortunately today was dead calm and a warm 13°

At the top of Zugspitze, it's Austria one side and germany the other.

We take another cable car into the centre of the volcano. 

People even bring their dogs with them.

Except when they see another dog, they're very well behaved.

Germany's highest church - open some days in summer only.

We then catch the cog-wheel train down (or rather through) the mountain.

In an amazing feat of engineering, a tunnel has

been bored through Zugspitze for the train.

We were in the tunnel for 20 minutes coming down.

We then go to Garmish-Partenkirchen and look back at Zugspitze.
